Community and Stuff
Yesterday I was interviewed on Community radio 2xx. The council on Social Services has a regular slot they call “Spotlight on Community” and each week they capture someone from a community organisation to talk about their work and a little about themselves. So yesterday was my turn
I drove into our small city centre early, they have been doing a lot of building and such lately. Just as well that I did!
The car park I had planned to park the car in, which was close to where I was going, had been closed off, and some of the streets….so I drove around the block twice and then had to go down into the basement of one of the new buildings, drive another half block to get closer to where I had to go and then figure out the payment system, go up the escalator and figure out where I had surfaced. Luckily it was only just around the corner from the radio studio….![]()
The Radio station is in a new building that was built to accommodate a selection of community organisations. In February a heavy hail storm half caved the roof in, so some of the offices had been moved around, I was told to go to level 1. There is a soup kitchen set up on the ground floor and it looked like it was the end of the early dinner session….a few odd characters were hanging around. I went up to level 1. A mouse maze with locked doors…damn where was the studio……back down stairs I go.
Now I need to find the ‘Ladies’, down another corridor I go…great found it,,,,
I also found a security fellow who informed me 2xx has moved back to level3…great. I arrive and all is well I am still a few minutes early ![]()
Christina is there, and asks if I brought my music?…..never mind she has emergency music……… and then we have a little chat, before going into the studio. It will be a half hour session, what am I going to say? Christina asks a few questions and we get underway…the whole thing went by very quickly, I did stumble over a few words and had a minor brain freeze but never mind. I wonder who listens to community radio? Christina introduced me by my maiden name as I have recently reverted to using that so I guess if anyone I know was listening, they may not know who was talking ![]()
The time went so quickly I didn’t really get time to talk about what I actually do apart from my day to day paid work. That is mostly an administrative/managing sort of job.
Today I have quite a long day as after my regular work finishes I go off to the community education program at a near by college to lead a course there for people who have chronic health conditions. I do this on a voluntary basis. It can be quite a lot of fun sometimes and I have met a few characters through these courses.
I also sit on the management committee of a community IT organisation. Apart from participating in the planning and management of this organisation, it requires me doing some work as well. Mostly things like applying for grants , publicity, interviewing prospective technical support staff etc. It is interesting and fun also. The organisation is predominantly volunteer run apart from the guys that go out and provide on site technical support to some of our members.
So there’s just a bit of a ramble…..I’m actually thinking of making a job change… so what’s next…. I wonder….![]()

Do you give autographs? 😀
I want an autograph too! Manda, you sound like a very busy lady. My job, I do when there’s work to do; some days I just there, look pretty and collect pay.
Can I say I knew you when? 😛
