The Swans
I watched the mother swan sit on her nest most of the winter. When she came off her nest, she brought 5 little ones to show us. Unfortunately one disappeared and now there are 4. We have had bad weather the past few days and I haven’t seen the family, I hope they are OK.
The babies are back this morning with their mum. 🙂
This year there is a new pair of swans by the lake. The female has made a nest in the same spot as last years mum and has been sitting there for the past week. Her mate spends time going back and forth to her and they call out to each other. I wonder when the next batch of babies will arrive 🙂
In the new year the swan parents encourage their young to leave home…quite insistently at that! At the end of January Mummy swan went and sat on her nest at the end of the middle island and stayed there. Mr Swan swam back and forth daily to check on things and to beg a bit of food on visits to shore.
The week before last I say Mummy getting off her nest and through the binoculars I could see some grey fluffy bodies…thought just 3. Within the hour Mummy Swan, Mr Swan and fluffy babies were nowhere to be seen!!!
The next day on my walk I saw the whole family and there were 7 !!!!!! little grey fluffy cygnets. Sooo cute, I hope they keep them all safe. Last year out of 6, only 3 survived to maturity.
