Part of our holiday plan was to visit Bermuda where my fathers sister went to live in the early 70’s. I had booked a 3 day accommodation and airfare package from Florida, which seemed to be the most economic way to go.

My Aunt (fathers sister) had never bought a house while in Bermuda and since my Uncle had passed away had moved into rented bed sitter style accommodation. My mother has had great trouble understanding this way of life and wanted a ‘real ‘ address rather than a PO box number. MY aunts daughters also still live in Bermuda. Frances is still single (at43) and her sister Pippa is married to a Bermudian .

Anyway, the bookings all went well and we made it to our Hotel, which was situated right on the coast with gorgeous views out to sea. My aunt picked us up the next morning to go sight seeing, to Dockyards at the far end of the Island. Bermuda has narrow little roads all over the island, the speed limit is 60k and there is a size limit on the kind of car you can buy. A lot of people own motor scooters (my cousin Frances rides one) and they are for hire for the tourists ( next time I’ll hire one…..mum thought it would be fun but as she was having trouble even figuring out how the showers worked, I wasn’t letting her near a scooter!) We stopped at some of the little bays and beaches along the way. The sand there is slightly pink from little tiny pieces of broken shells in it.

The next day we planned to see the rest of Bermuda via public transport. We caught a bus to Hamilton and then a Ferry which went to the far end (Dockyards) and then all the way to the other end to St Georges (ok get the map/google earth out to get the idea) and then caught a bus back to Hamilton and then on to our Hotel. It was a great day, lovely weather we got back to the hotel by 3.30 in time for a swim in the pool before my aunt picked us up to meet up with Frances and Pippa to see their horses ( no children, they have horses) and where they stable and ride them, before heading out for dinner together in Hamilton.

We were again lucky with the weather, it was breezy slightly humid and lovely and warm. I would have loved to have had time for a beach day and a swim in the sea but we ran out of time. Bermuda is very pretty with its colourful houses but it is quite densely populated, it is getting almost impossible to buy a house there unless you have a couple of million to spare! I hope they severely limit building before it’s too late. I would have liked to spend a couple more days there.

Then it was back to Florida for 2 days before heading home to Australia…. and that was a looong ride home.
