Of Mice and Melvin

I just had a crappy nights sleep thanks to my resident PIA of a cat! In my garden beds near the back fence I have a very bushy crop of long grass, the rain we have had at the beginning of summer has helped it along tremendously. Melvin spends a lot of his out door time stalking ‘things’ in this long grass, bugs, skinks and mice.
Last weekend when I was at the computer late in the evening, actually in chat, I heard behind me the pitter patter of pussy feet race across my wood floor. I turned around to see what Melvin was up to but he had disappeared towards the lounge room. when I looked there he was, he had brought a little mouse in and was tossing it about. I went to have a look, it wasn’t moving, it was no longer alive. Melvin wasn’t giving it up though so I coaxed him back to the family room to get him and his toy outside. I turned my back for a minute or so to do something and when I looked around Melvin was eating his mouse..eeeeuuuwww…. in another 2 seconds there was not a whisker or a bit of fur or anything left of it…all gone!
I leave the back door open just a bit so Melvin can go in and out without bothering me every 5 mins at night…. he has scared away all the neighbourhood cats, so we don’t get strangers coming in to eat his food anymore ![]()
Anyway, last night at a bout 3 am I was awakened by the sound of Melvin jumping about in my room. I had left my cupboard open and my shoes (hmmm I seem to have accumulated quite a few..no matter one needs shoes) were spilling out into the room I have a basket of folded clothes for putting away and a few bags and what not on the floor. I could hear little thumps and scrabbling noised and sniffing
what is going on…I said something like “Melvin!! get out! #@*&%$” to which there was more scrabbling about and sniffs and thumps.![]()
I turned on the light, there was Melvin, sniffing around in the cupboard, turning over shoes trying to claw behind bags…. Oh crap…. he’s brought a mouse in and lost it!
I have always suspected Melvin’s eyesight is not to good, he is cross eyed… and the sniffing was him trying to find his mouse by smell. so there is me half asleep at 3 in the morning on my hands and knees trying to find this mouse. I pulled a bag aside and there is was, ran right past me behind a chair…uuuggghhh Melvin saw the movement an went after it but he is so hopeless, more sniffing and frantic scratching about. Now we are both searching for this mouse… Melvin got it !! He took it out of my room and the started to toss it about
I tried to get it to throw it outside………. Melvin picked it up…… dropped it and batted it with his paw and then it escaped again !!1… behind the door…Melvin and I are both trying to catch it……..”get out of the way Melvin!!” The damn thing makes a run for it, through my legs and back into my room
and under my bed
Now what am I going to do?
It’s now 3.30am… I walk around my bed poke about under it… Melvin is running back and forth and in and out from under my bed. At this point I decided to give up and go back to sleep. Meanwhile Melvin continued his search and every now and then jumped up on the bed to sniff around and make sure the mouse hadn’t come up there ![]()
So now somewhere in my room is a little mouse…….. I will have to pull everything out and see if I can find it so I don’t end up with a smelly dead little mouse hidden behind something
Damn Cat!!

I wonder if Melvin can teach Libby a thing or two?? Not that I want mice running around the inside of my house, but just a little action from her would be nice.
