I finally did it! I have been promising myself since the weather warmed up to drive down to the coast for some sea air and a swim.

where I live is situated inland about 250kms from the south coast of NSW (Aust). It’s about a 2 hr drive across open grazing land, wooded ‘bush’, finally with a fairly steep decent (Clyde Mt) to the coastal plain.

The halfway mark is a small country town called Braidwood, traditionally for a Pee stop and a leg stretch at the Park. When we would stay for a few days at the coast we would buy fresh bread from the bakery there also.

The decent down the Clyde mountain is windy and often damp and misty. Heavy clouds always manage to settle at the top and the road is often wet. Way back when, it was not much more than a dirt track, quite challenging and scary. Now a days there are plenty of passing lanes and the road is smooth and not too narrow, there are still some pretty sharp hairpin bends but the drive is not hard.

At the bottom of the mountain decent the road meets up with the river Clyde and crosses it at Nelligen. In the 60’s before the bridge was built there was a small ferry that took cars across. In the holiday season there was sometimes a very long wait to get across. I actually remember going on holiday with my cousins and waiting to get across the river on the Ferry…….that trip seemed to take a whole day…actually it probably did back then.

The road then follows the river to it’s mouth at Batemans Bay. Half an hour south is Broulee, where I have often spent holidays. This part of the coast is very pretty and although the summer is pretty hot the sea water is always quite cool from the southern currents i guess. Today I had a swim and it was cool but not cold like I have experienced it in previous visits.

Across from Broulee is Broulee island. It is no longer an island as a sand dune has built up and connected it to the mainland. I remember when I was a teenager and right until sometime in my twenties when the island was separated by a channel of water about 100 metres wide. The sand dune has created a lovely sheltered bay on it’s southern side, where I swam today.

I left home a bit after 10am this morning and got home just before 6 pm
