Looking back at childhood

Looking back at childhood

Sis recently wrote a blog about some of her childhood memories and I commented that I thought that the best years of my life was the 70’s from when I was 14-24. Since, I have been thinking about my pre teen years, they were a bit different than most. By the time I was 13 I had lived in 5 different countries and attended 8 different schools!

Having a father in the Air Force meant that we moved every two and a half years. Sometimes more. With all the changes I sometimes wonder how I made it through school at all. A friend once commented that they thought I was very self contained, perhaps that is just resilience from having such a nomadic childhood. We started off in Malta, then England, Australia, back to England, Holland, Australia, Malaysia, Aust, England, Malaysia and finally returning to Australia permanently in 1974.

I think my mother should be credited with getting us through all the changes. Although we moved from house to house we always had a home. My mother was a great believer in routine and where ever we were there were always some familiar things…things that came with us from place to place, some of them are at my mothers current home and will go to her new one with her. My mother also made sure that we didn’t miss too much school. To the point that when we had an extended holiday, or perhaps it was between moves, at my cousins place, when my cousins went back to school I was sent with them, just for 2 weeks. I was actually always very shy, and starting a new school and having to make new friends was both exciting and stressful.

In 1965, my mother decided to take us (my brother and sister and I) to Holland to see her family, we were between moves and our next house wasn’t ready so it seemed like a good opportunity before all the old relatives were no longer around. That year I went to 3 schools in 3 different countries! Australia, England and Holland. Again in 1969 I had 3 schools in 3 countries, this time Malaysia, Australia and England.

Canberra, where I live now, has always been our Australian base. My mothers older sister and family were living here when we first came to Australia in 1958. The picture of us on a picnic one hot January was taken by the river not far from where I live now. In those days it was like a day trip out of Canberra in the bush, now it is 10 mins drive from my home. There are still picnic tables.. newer ones, but the road there is sealed now not dirt and there are amenties and a car park. The picture of my cousin and I on houseback was taken not far from here also, there are houses there now. The area was the property called Cooleman which is now the residential suburbs of Chapman, Stirling, Rivett and Warramanga.

  2. What an exciting childhood you had! To be able to see and witness and participate in all that diversity and culture! Although as a kid, it may have been mixed emotions though eh? Specially having to make new friends only to leave them behind, when you had to move again. That had to be hard. But I’m sure that you have many wonderful memories to keep with you forever.

My fondest youngin memories are also in the 70’s. ( Also the most vivid. ) I have many fond memories from before as well. And I keep them near and dear to me.

Thank you, as always, for sharing life from your corner of the globe. Many of us live vicariously through you and your many experiences. ( grinnin )

    Hugs Manda!
